V.E.N.T. - Volcanic Eruption in Nature Toolset

Demonstration

Description

V.E.N.T. is a toolset developed in Unreal Engine 5 for a fictional broadcasting company that wishes to film an item with a volcano eruption as the backdrop. It was developed as a submission for the Advanced Graphics module in the MSc. Games Development and Design course at the University of Lincoln in the academic year 2023-24.

The toolset enables the user to change various scene parameters such as the time of day, weather conditions and camera location in real time to suit their needs.

The following video highlights the features of this toolset and discusses the technologies used in its development. The real-time capability is also prominently highlighted towards the end.

Highlights

The forest and flower field were procedurally generated  using Unreal Engine's Procedural Content Generation (PCG) framework.

Real-time changes to the scene were implemented using the Remote Control plugin from Unreal Engine.

The cinematic sequence was created using the Sequencer feature in Unreal Engine.

Unreal Insights was used to analyze and optimize the GPU draw calls.

Programming for the scene events such as time of day changes and volcanic eruption was done using Blueprints.

Nanite and Lumen were also leveraged in some capacity during development.
